Christian Pastor Assaulted; Protesters Block Road

NAGERCOIL, Tamil Nadu(SAR NEWS) –Pastor George Philip (58), a senior pastor of the Pentecostal Mission, was assaulted while he was walking along the road for a house visit of his parishioners in a tiny village Kottavillai, on the periphery of Western Ghats hills, early May 14 morning.
A gang of about 10 persons, purportedly belonging to a Hindu fanatical group, waylaid him and hurled abuses at him. The pastor just smiled and walked away. But for no reason or rhyme, the gang pounced on him, rained blows, stoned him and fled the spot.
Philip was seriously injured and admitted to a private hospital.
Hearing the news, the local Christians and the public led by the Congress party leaders, Prayer Prince and Joseph Thayasingh, and the members of the Paattali Makkal Katchi, a local political party in Tamil Nadu numbering about 1000, descended on the Melpuram village junction. They blocked the road and demanded the arrest of the gang that attacked the pastor.
The roadblock created a traffic jam in the area and vehicles had to be diverted through another road.
The police and revenue officials arrived at the spot and assured the people of proper action, after which the protesters dispersed.
