BARUIPUR (W. Bengal), 19 April, 2011 – Bishop Salvadore Lobo of Baruipur Diocese released the first two books of a five volume Catechism Text Book series, entitled Sir, We Want to See Jesus, by Fr. Thomas Kalarathil sdb in the presence of the entire presbyterium of the Diocese.
The Bishop, who also gave the imprimatur and wrote the foreword to the Book, presented Book I to Fr. Faustin Brank, the Secretary of the Diocesan Commission for Education and Book II to Fr. Jose Pampady, the vice provincial of Kolkata Salesian Province.
Introducing the Books, Fr. Thomas, the author, said that promoting and improving the teaching of Catechism to young people had been his passion for many years.
“Though there may be many catechism books, I have tried to bring out a new book that is simple, short and scripture-based. I intend to bring out the series also in Bengali, Santali and Nepali” he added.
The series stresses on reading from the Scripture, interiorizing the content through educational activities and putting the lesson into practice in daily life.
Speaking at the close of the ceremony, Bishop Lobo said that he was happy to give his imprimatur to this work of Fr. Thomas, because “it has very clear content and is beautifully presented with a very personal touch.”
Bishop also stressed that this work is different from many catechism books we have, as it touches the heart.
“We go by the language of the heart and not the language of the head. We miss people when we go to them with the head alone.”
The Bishop did not tire to insist that the book is “totally Bible and value based; method of presenting is excellent.”
With his characteristic pastoral zeal, bishop concluded saying “Youth is attracted by the media. We must use the print media and write letters to youth as a way to reach out to them.”
Fr Thomas thanked Fr. Francis Moonnamvayalil SDB, the parish priest of Diamond Harbour, for his constant and friendly support his efforts.
