KOLKATA, (C.M. Paul) – Some 600 children from 25 schools / NGOs celebrated Children’s Day, 13 November at one of the premiere educational institutions in Kolkata, Don Bosco School Park Circus. The students of DBPC classes 11 & 12 organized this annual mini fete for underprivileged children with chance games, competitions, snacks and prizes. The students themselves contributed the gifts.
“This event is mainly targeted towards building motivation among the under privileged children and to instill confidence to face the world,” said Rector & Principal Fr Siby Vadakel.
The Vice-Principal Fr V.T. Jose added, “This is an occasion for the children to play and enjoy, win gifts and go back home with a smile on their faces.”
The day-long events included dance, singing, face painting, quiz, recitation, best out of waste, mehendi and rangoli.
DBPC also organized Prothsahan 2011 (Motivation), 13 November, an inter school competition and cultural event for the underprivileged children. Volunteers of TCS-Maitree (Tata Consultancy Services Ltd) and a Jamshedpur based Non Governmental Organization (NGO) called EduCare Society organized the events.
Some of the participating institutes were Don Bosco Night Schools of Liluah and Park Circus, DB Ashalayam, READS, All Bengal’s Women’s Home, St Xavier’s Night School. Navjeevan Sister’s Home, Society for Correctional Intervention and research, TCCI Ma Sharoda School, Parivar Group, Our Lady Queen of the Missions, Carmel Deshpriya Park, and Dakshin Kolkata Sevashram.
Don Bosco Kolkata has been running a free night school for some 800 underprivileged children of the locality up to class 8, for over 30 years.
