ICYM Kalyani: building paper bridge

KALYANI, (C.M. Paul) – Some 70 youth leaders from three parishes of south zone of Krishnagar diocese in Nadia district held day-long leadership programme at Auxilium Convent School Kalyani, 17 September.

Taking advantage of Viswakarma Puja (worship of the god of work tools) holiday, Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) members from Hobipur, Ranagahat and Kalyani parishes started their day celebrating the Eucharist with the diocesan ICYM director Fr Angshu. The Salesian Sisters not only hosted the progarmme but also took charge of the camp logistics.

The parish priest Fr Peechat Thomas and assistant parish priest Fr C.M. Paul as well animators and ICYM office bearers lit the lamp of faith.

Superior of the Auxlium Convent Sr Rosalaia Tirkey conducted the icebreaking session by dividing participants into seven groups. She got them choose a Biblical character who expressed his or her faith and dress up the character with newspapers.

Then director of Don Bosco Youth Services Kalyanai Fr Raymond Tudu explained the key elements of faith to mark the upcoming Year of Faith (11 October). He explained that Faith as expressed by Abraham “our father in the faith” is followed today by Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Jesus and Mary Sister Catherine from Ranaghat explained the qualities of a leader through a game “building bridges with newspaper.” The competition consisted of building a bridge within 10 minutes with supplied newspaper and scotch tape. The bridge had to hold the weight of books and should be able to pass a football beneath it. Through the game Sr Catherine encouraged everyone to utilize their “god-given” talents for the service of church and society.

After the concluding remarks by Fr Angshu, the group concluded the day with a brief cultural programme presented by members of the three parishes.
