Indian Salesian goes on US Television

GUWAHATI, (C.M. Paul) – A Salesian from Guwahati province on Summer Mission assignment was on an hour-long television program in the U.S. when his Sunday Mass was telecast, Sunday 21 July.

“I was in Victoria – Our Lady of Victory church. It is the Cathedral church of the diocese of Victoria,” says the parish priest of Guwahati co-cathedral in a letter to Mission Cooperative Plan Coordinator / Donor Relations Joann Oliva at the Salesian Mission Office in New Rochelle, New York.

Every Sunday the 9 a.m. Mass at the Victoria Cathedral is televised by ABC Network television channel.

Giving the circumstances of the broadcast the visiting priest Fr T.O. Jose (Thiruthanathy) says, “In the assignment paper given to me, the pastor at the cathedral had stated that there was no need to preach for the 9 a.m. Mass.”

Narrating further, Fr Thiruthanathy adds, “However after he heard me speak for the Saturday vigil Mass, on his own, he told me to preach for the 9 a.m.  Mass on Sunday.”

It is a timed Mass, and the final blessing must be given before 10 am according to a contract with the television company.

The television channel estimates the average number of viewers on a Sunday to be about 200,000 (two lakhs) people all over the state of Texas and beyond giving the Salesian Mission appeal reach a vast number of viewers.

The cathedral pastor Fr. Gary “was full of appreciation for the homily and added the collections were good,” writes Fr Thiruthanathy in an email to Salesian Mission Office New Rochelle adding, “and the works of the Salesian Mission has reached the ears of many many people. Praise the Lord.”

“Fr.Gary is a very fine priest, brotherly, caring, young, hardworking.  He is 51 years old and is of Czech descent (13 yrs younger than me),” says Fr Thiruthanathy complimenting the Pastor.
