The American Library at the American Centre Kolkata played host to visiting Mass Communication students of Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU), 4th June 2015. Librarian Ms Bobby Hore coordinated the 3-hour long program which included address by assistant Public Affairs Officer Mr Greg Pardo and Director of the library Dr Sushanta Banerjee.
Chief – Media & Public Communications officer Ms Erica Diya Basu led 13-member student-faculty team through a practical session on “Mass Communication and New Media” where each one created a Twitter account and started messaging US Consul and Director of the American Centre.
During the presentation by United States India Education Foundation (USIEF) Director Shevanti Narayan gave detailed information on the process of pursuing Higher Studies in the US.
After Mr Debashis Ghosh exposed students to the vast resources of the “Elibrary USA” the ADBU students had an interactive session with two media IVLP (International Vistas Leadership Program) alumni from Kolkata Mr Bipin Newar from Taaza TV and Ms Chandrayee Chatterjee from The Telegraph daily.
The sessions concluded with a short film on media related issues entitled: “Feeding the Beast,” a tour of the Library and USIEF, and American library membership enrollment.
Earlier, the students had interactive sessions with Indian (Bollywood) film theory guru Gaston Roberge at St Xavier’s College Kolkata, Director of Chitrabani and editor of The Herald weekly (estd 1839) Julian Das, as well as features Editor Mike Flannery at The Statesman (estd 1818).
The 12-day field trip (27 May – 7 June) which took students to Mirik, Darjeeling, Bandel, Kolkata and Digha beach would fetch them two credits when they file, one each, feature and human interest stories, as well as present two photos each on six themes which would be part of a photographic exhibition, and complete a short 5-8 minute travelogue video documentation.
