Guwahati — The ADBU internal Complaints Committee (ICC) organized a “Gender Amity and Sexual Harassment at Workplace” awareness program for the Schools of Technology and Social Sciences in two batches, at its Azara campus, 25 August.

In an interactive 90 minute session Development Consultant Dr Enakshi Dutta explained to students and faculty the various aspects of “sexual harassment in the workplace.”

“Sexual harassment is a violation of women’s fundamental rights to dignity and equality,” said Dr Dutta giving ample examples from daily life.

Citing a recent survey conducted by Sakshi in New Delhi Dr Dutta said 80 per cent of those surveyed said sexual harassment exists in the workplace and 49 per cent of them confessed they experienced sexual harassment at workplace.
The survey further revealed that 58 per cent of the people had not heard of Vishaka Guidelines and only 20 percent of organizations have implemented the ICC.

Dr Dutta did not hesitate to underline the fact that sexual harassment at workplace is “unfair, unwanted, unacceptable, and unlawful.”

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redress) Act came into force from 9 December 2013.

Most Indian employer’s have not implemented the law despite the legal requirement that any workplace with more than 10 employees need to implement it. The government has threatened to take stern action against employers who fail to comply with this law.
